Chapter Five: Birth of
the Last Weapon
One
Week Later:
he sees it! he sees the knife in his fathers hands! it's
night, and his legs are so slow it's like running against a strong wind. his
father is slow too, slow when the knife swings, but it's always close to the
skin!
his father then runs away... and william knows he is dangerous..
but he chases anyway. he must catch the evil! his legs move so slow, but he's
rushed up close to his father.. and the blade swings again! into his chest it
pierces! the tendons of the blade dig into the wound!
William is
Jolted From His Sleep! Hot sweat Covers his body. He pushes the cotton filled
blanket off of him, and crawls out of the bed. The air is cold, and the light of
the first few minutes of morning still blue. It's six A.M., his father will be
here in an hour to pick him up for work. He is the only one awake in the house.
He walks into the bathroom. He stands there for the longest time staring
at himself in the mirror. On most days he stares at himself before he even wakes
up, before the sleep is even cleared from his eyes. Now he stares with fear...
He likes nightmares, they are adventurous dreams. He has died twice before in
them.. at the hands of a large unknown murderer.. but this was different.. this
was from his father. He didn't know why, but he was still terrified. He looked
at the blue in his eyes. In an hour he should be all right.
----O----
They
stare at him, Chris sweats and shakes. The drool slides down his cheek as he
mutters. The monitors to his heart show it beating ten Times that of normal.
William was the last newbie on Deborah's team. The 'mask project' was
taken away from them; and now, with every one else.. they watched from behind
the protective glass.
Dr. Albright sits protected in his plastic suit,
questioning Chris Penner. Most of the responses were garbled in spit. Once or
twice an hour his nose would bleed uncontrollably. Dr. Albright stood from his
chair, "Then that's it, That's all we can get outta' this thing"
They
had learned much from the new mind Chris shares... He's a puppet.. a body that
walks where the 'Masters' wish it.. who's hands move as 'they' will. The teams
had long since guessed the 'masters' were the aliens of the ship. The mask
remembers everything.
"Everyone, theirs coffee and crackers in the
corridor...", he sounds like he's waiting for the next miracle breakthrough,
"Everyone mingle and see what we can come up with"
Everyone gets up as
though they were leaving a movie theater, only with bright lights. William sits
there though.. he looks at Chris.. strapped to the bed. William was standing
beside him when he decided to play 'tribal dancer'.. when he decided to dance
with the alien mask on his face. William could do nothing when the newbie
screamed. When the tendrils lashed into Chris' eyes, William just didn't know if
the mask would attack him next. That was last week.. and now Chris starts
muttering again.. the orderly at his side, recording the ancient chants.
William feels the pit in his stomach. The regret. Again the metal orb in
Chris' forehead glows. It does that now on a regular basis. No one knows why
yet. Chris Screams "Guyba!", and Shakes Violently in his Restraints! William
gets up and leaves the room.
He walks through the crowd down the
corridor. He walks into the study lab with the pictures on the wall, the one
with the blueprint of the alien ship and the photos of the inside. He sits in
the chair in the room, He sits back with his head flat against the padding
behind him. His throat almost chokes with the pit he feels in his stomach. His
belly coughs breaths that almost feel like laughter, horrible breaths that only
make him feel more guilty. Then he stares at the wall blankly.. his eyes glazing
over the photos. It's like he's gone to sleep for the hour, only with open eyes.
He then sees it... again the metal orb. In the black and white photo it
is the same... the photo of the alien 'control room'. The photo shows the three
AD units imbedded in the alien flesh. Each one has a metal orb in it's center..
just as the mask in the forehead.
He Bolts Up From The Chair! It Is
Obvious. It Is Hope! He does Every thing to Keep his Run as a Walk into The
Corridor!
Through the crowd he finds Dr. Albright speaking with another
man, "Seven Times we've tried to take that mask off... and whenever we ask him
how to do it, he says we have to use the hand device... What the hell is the
hand device"
The other man carries the conversation like a cocktail a
party, "It might be something in the ship we haven't come across yet... kind of
like how we came across the mask"
William walks up to them, "Excuse me
Sir..."
Albright's eyes turn down, "Yes.. uhh.. William isn't it?", he
says smiling.
Kind of shy, "I have an idea... I was looking at the Metal
Orb in the masks forehead... And it reminded me of the one in the AD unit. I was
thinking, their the same... the thing glows, maybe it's sending some kind of
signal.."
The man stands with the Styrofoam coffee cup in his hand,
"What kind of signal? I mean, we still don't know why it keeps blinking"
"Maybe it's just trying to report in", William's eyes still bright.
"But it could also be looking for an interface... ", Dan Albright then
thinks of the glow ring as a t.v. remote. His mind waits for the proposal like
candy, "What are you suggesting?"
"Line the two up next time it blinks,
see if it activates anything. Maybe the AD unit is the hand device Chris keeps
talking about... I mean, it is portable.. hand held"
"What do you think
Dan...", The man looks to Albright with realized eyes, "We never found any
neural structures in the tendon tissue..."
Dan Albright thinks for a
second.. his eyes are lit up, but no smile is on his serious face. "Let's get it
from storage", and then he points to the man, "Get the equipment set up for the
experiment in two hours.. I want to record everything" He sounds like he's
already made his miracle break through.
"Don't you think we should do it
tomorrow? We haven't processed the data from today yet!"
"We've got
nothing today. We got nothing yesterday. It won't take that long to get the
equipment set up"
----O----
The
Blazer Man Blocks the Specimen storage Door. "I'm sorry Dr. Albright, but I need
to get security authorization before I can let you in here"
Dan Albright
Stands with his Adrenaline already Pumping! He Knows He Is Close. He Knows This
will bring the Experiment to the Next level. The old man looks at the build of
the young blazer man... this frustration makes him think of the guard as a snot
nosed brat that would sooner tattle to his parents for taking a cookie from the
cookie jar. Bellmont himself then walks out of the elevator and starts towards
them.
"Bellmont! This is an Insult! I am Head of Research! I Do Not Need
Your Approval to Begin a New Experiment!"
"doctor, this is a security
issue. we have already had two of these 'memory units' go missing"
"Damn
It Bellmont! You've Already Had That Unit Confiscated For Four Days! It's Not in
your Jurisdiction anymore... It's Mine! It's My job to Figure out how to
Activate it!"
Bellmont's eyes light up, "What?!"
"We think unit
AD-3 might be able to Link up with the OuGaba toh mask. This activation will
give us the next Leap in data transfer technology! Your 'Security Measures' Are
Standing In My Way!"
"Relax doctor.. I just don't want to loose control
of this last one. I'm assigning one of my best men to handle the unit for you.
Use him as you wish.. but under No circumstances is He to part with that unit."
Now calm, "well.. thank you. It's nice that your actually working with
the team for once. It's appreciated Mr. Bellmont" The Doctor walks away with a
skip in his step. A sly grin cracks itself into Bellmont's stone face.
----O----
The
Ougaba toh Lab is crowded again. Chris Penner has been propped up to a sitting
position with sensor cameras surrounding him. The lights have been dimmed just
enough so that the infrared cameras will work. Every scientist of the Cartiger
Research Group has tried to find some excuse to be present for this
experiment... Not all of them would fit behind the protective glass wall.
Deborah's team was lucky. They had experience with the mask before, so
not only were they allowed to stay, they were even allowed to stand on this side
of the protective glass this time. William felt technical in the plastic
isolation suit they made him wear, it was a good feeling, his best all day.
Dr. Albright takes center stage again, just sealing the hood of his suit
as he walks into the center, "Places People.. Places... The AD unit is about to
be brought in"
The door opens and Michael Savoar, the blazer man
enters.. the AD-3 is held securely in both his hands. Bellmont and three others
come through the door shortly after, rifles over their shoulders.
Dan
Albright immediately walks over to them, "What are you doing Bellmont? You said
you'd give me 'One' of your men to handle this... You didn't say anything about
interference"
"Michael is your man to handle Albright. Me and my men are
here just to make sure that Nothing goes wrong"
"fine, whatever. Just
make sure that Michael wears an insulation suit while he handles that thing"
"No!", Bellmont tries to recover his stone expression, "he does this as
is.. or it's not done at all"
Daniel Albright looks the other old man in
the eyes... he can feel something going on under Bellmont's skin, but has no
clue what he's really after. "Fine. he's your man, he's your risk" The doctor
then leads Michael into the center, where Penner is strapped. Albright gestures
to a few rods that are screwed together, "If you'll place the unit in the rig.."
"No!" Bellmont steps forward, "He holds it personally the whole time"
Albright shakes his head. Everyone in the room now knows that something
is going on. The people behind the protective glass are getting more nervous at
the shotguns the blazer men carry. Albright nods to a gangly assistant, she
walks up to Michael and pins electrodes into the alien tendon tissue. Albright
then looks to the people at the control switches, "If were ready to begin on
camera's.."
"we're recording sir.. full spectrum and all stats on
subject Penner and unit AD-3"
Albright hesitates for one more moment. He
knows Bellmont knows something.. and Bellmont is not hiding this secret. The
scientists are being used.. but for what? He then turns to Michael, "If you'll
hold it out towards Mr. Penner's forehead, we may proceed"
"that's It?
"That's All we've got to go on."
Albright steps back, leaving
center stage to Michael Savoar and Chris Penner. Everyone is silent and the
Cameras roll. Michael stands there, this is his first time 'on stage'. He
briefly looks to the crowd.. to those judging his performance. Then he raises
his arms, holding the unit out to the retarded guy in the chair. For almost
thirty seconds nothing happens.. Michael slowly starts to move his arms to one
side, then another, that maybe his aim is off.
From the sensor control
console someone whispers up to Dr. Albright, "eleven seconds 'till the next
light pulse.."
Michael looks to the face of Chris Penner again.. through
the thick smooth curves and into his eyes.. they twitch.. rapidly, consistently.
And Then It Starts! The Masks Orb starts to Glow.. it Hums as it Gets Brighter!
Michael Holds the AD Unit Out on Straightened Arms, Like He's Afraid.. As Though
He's Holding a Grenade With No Pin!
The AD-3 then Glows... Both Metal
Orbs Glow Together.. the Light reaching for Each other... Then It Clashes Like
Lightening! The AD-3 is Dark, And the Ougaba toh Mask starts Arcing Electrical
Streams into the Air around it! The Light keeps Flashing. And then it dims...
It smells like smoke. The Metallic surface of both orbs are covered in a
thin film of black carbon, the silver still shines through. Michael slowly
lowers his arms. Chris stops muttering.. he stops twitching and sweating.. the
machines for once show his heart rate to be near normal for the first time in
days. Chris then moves his lips, "can I have some water.. I'm hot"
Daniel Albright walks up to him, "Young Man, you can have all the water
you want"
"I want Ice water. It's really hot in here"
"Chris...
what is it that you see now?"
His eyes blink around the tendrils that
dig into the sockets, "I see you.. and when I close my eyes I see my reflection
in the water.. the Me with the beard and Ougaba toh"
"I see"
"Do
you think I could get some beer later?"
Dan smiles, "We'll see" He puts
his hand on Chris' shoulder, he's glad to see the young man act normal for once.
The silver of the metallic orbs shine through the carbon soot that covers them.
He glances to the control panel..
"Theirs no change in the AD-3 unit.
The alien mask is reading weak on all signals"
Dan looks back at the
orbs, "I want the burnt carbon cleaned off and samples taken. Deborah, you take
the AD unit.. ", he points at two members of her team, "you two work on the
Ougaba toh mask"
Bellmont's face is stern as he steps forward, "That
Unit is Not Leaving Savoar's Hands"
"Fine, he can hold it for them while
they clean it off", Dan wants to do anything to belittle Bellmont's arrogance,
treating him 'unimportantly' seems the best way. "Jared, how long until we can
see the results of our experiment?"
One of the men from the control
panels look up from his switches and notebooks, "It could take up to three hours
before we can process the data"
"Very well", Albright then looks to the
protective glass, "Everyone take a break, we'll see you back in three hours"
Most of the crowd begins to file out into the corridor. Everyone stops talking
as they pass by the blazer men that carry rifles. Only a few are left to watch
through the glass.
Deborah almost grabs Michael Savoar by the elbow, he
grimaces, "Fine, then just follow me over here" They walk to a small table. In
the center of the room a small team have already begin work on the mask. The
quiet man of her lab, the one that likes to sleep in less lit corners, then
picks up a surgical scalpel into his fingers, he uses it to lift up the
millimeter (0.04") black lumps from the orb. Deborah Merek catches the samples
in a glass petri dish. William watches over their shoulder, and Deb simply
smiles.
Deb hands the Petri Dish to the quiet man, "Aaron, would you
file this in lab three" The quiet man takes the glass dish and heads for the
lab. Deborah has a 'toothbrush' in her hand and is scrubbing the carbon marks
off the metal orb. "You know William, I hate it when people are needlessly
looking up over my shoulder, if you grab the other brush you can help me get the
rest of this 'gunk' off"
Michael interrupts, "Are You sure that's such a
good idea?"
"Why? Would a little cleaning be a security violation?" She
continues scrubbing, waiting for William to join her before she changes her
glance. He carefully grabs the extra brush and holds it over the orb.. waiting
for instruction. "Use the bristles to fleck off the specks of carbon. We'll
clean the smudges off later with a softer brush"
William begins to feel
guilty again.. "how much damage do you think we did to the metal?", this linking
experiment was his idea.
She talks with her eyes on the work, "I don't
know if we've damaged the 'equipment', but I think half the crud stuck to this
is just fried dust particles from the air. No matter how filtered the
ventilation, there's always some" Her brush knocks a splotch of black that keeps
sticking to the metal... finally she just uses her rubber glove to dab it off;
her concentration shifts as she tries to flick it into another glass dish.
"William could you dab the last of that splotch off.. use your glove, the brush
won't get it"
William uses the index finger of his latex covered hand.
He likes the surgical gloves.. they always feel technical. He looks at the
metal, and the organic tendons that wrap under it. His finger touches the black
speck on the metal.. The Fire Shoots Up His Finger, "Ouch!!" His Hand Pulls Back
Like He's Touched a Hot Burner... the Black Speck Burned a hole in the Latex...
Deb Sees the Black on her Glove melting Through as Well, "Ohhhh Shit!"
The Metal Orb of AD-3 then Glows Again... Slowly Humming.. "This Is
It!!", Michael Pulls the Unit Away! The Tendons Start Intertwining in
Themselves, "Sir, It's Working!" The Intensity of the Glowing Increases! The
Tendons Slide Faster and Faster under Their Metal Plates!
Daniel
Albright Shouts From Across the Room, "Michael! Drop The Damn Unit!"
Michael Turns His Back To Merek and William, He Stands Clutching the
Device.. Waiting for it to Take him! The Three Metal Plates that Cover the
Tendon Tissues Pop off Onto the Floor.. He Grips Into the Flesh, "This is It!
I'm Ready!"
The Tendons Shoot into His Chest! They Pierce through His
Ribs! He Clutches it as They Enter Him... as They Dig Through to the Other
Side.. They Shoot as Arrows.. Grappling through the Plastic at William's Mouth!
"Aaaughgh!!" William Screams! The Tendons Whip Around His Body, Cutting Through
the Plastic Suit! Michael stands, holding the last of the alien flesh in his
hands.. a few strings.. like in the center of a 'cat's cradle' the metal orb
dangles.. then it too slides through Michael's chest. It finds it's way above
William's eye's. William stands arching back.. the tendons completely encase
him, only a few flaps of the plastic suit hang out.
Michael falls to a knee... the blood drips from his mouth
before his final collapse. A Drop of Sweat Beads Down Bellmont's Brow... "Shoot
Him! I Said Shoot Him!"
Albright Races Out In Front of The Barrels of
the Guns, "No! Don't Shoot!"
"Like Hell is Someone Else Getting that
Weapon!"
The Metal's Ring Keeps Glowing. The Tendons spin Themselves
into finer threads.. covering more of the body. Each String Secretes gel as it
Thickens.. the Gel collecting Itself into Cartilage... At his mouth, from the
Tendons, Small Metal Beads Grow. The Same is For the Sides of his Head.. only
larger.. into Palm sized Orbs. In his waist one Singularly Grows... William is
by now Unconscious, His Body only Standing.
"You Can't Shoot Him! You
Can't Hurt Him, Or Our Research!"
Bellmont Knocks Dan out of the Way and
points his Own handgun At William, "This is More Important than Research Old
Man... This is About Leveling Our Playing Field!"
"You Can't Kill Him...
He's One of Our Own Men.."
Bellmont looks down his Gun sight.. he slowly
lowers the weapon.. "If he Stays Alive.. then he's My man Albright. I want That
Weapon With No fuss"
----O----
The
two walked into the office, and Bellmont sat at his desk. Albright sat across
from him in the leather chair. He Pulls out a bottle of bourbon from his desk
drawer, and two crystal glasses.
"What's going on here Bellmont? What's
been happening, what haven't you told us?"
Bellmont pours each crystal
glass, and slides one across the wood, "Have you ever been hunting Dan?"
"A First name basis are we? No. I don't go hunting"
"I have", he
gulps the glass, and reaches to pour another, "I've made killing my job too"
"And that's your excuse for lack of humanity..."
"Fuck You
Albright. Fuck You. I'm Telling you that I need that Skin as a Weapon. What
we're Facing Gives Me No Other Choice" His Glass is clenched in his hand,
squeezing hard against the wooden desk.
Daniel runs his wrinkled finger
around his glass, "What happened? Why did you confiscate AD-3? How did you know
it would do this?"
"It's a weapon Albright. When I was hunting Madison
St. Claire it activated. She's got the first one. She's waiting to attack us
now"
"Waiting for what?"
"I don't know. She's not the only one
either. Someone else has got the second one, I don't know who, and I don't even
know if their on our side"
"but... how do you know their even a threat?"
Bellmont slides his blazer off, pulling back his shirt he shows his
upper arm... all the muscles.. crushed to the bone. "She only grabbed my arm to
throw me"
"My God..."
"I've seen her do worse" He slides the
white shirt back on, and buttons it up. "This gets worse.. Cartiger's not the
only one with an alien ship anymore..."
Daniel's eyes are as wide as his
mouth, " ...who else has one... ?"
"I don't know. I don't know who they
are or what they've got. But their farther along than us. That's why I needed
that Alien skin. I need to give it to someone I can trust, one of my own people.
You must understand that Albright, You do know Why you've got to help me.."
Daniel looks down into his glass. His wrinkled finger slides around the
rim before he can look up, "...yes Bellmont. I understand"
----O----
William stands in the room with the alien
skin enveloping his own. Everyone else has been evacuated, even Chris Penner.
Only the blazer men and their rifles were allowed to stay. Bellmont has Dr.
Albright and his personal assistant with him in the room. Albright sorts through
the knives and scalpels that best fit his hand.
"Who do you plan on
giving the skin to now?"
"My second choice is young Atchinson"
Daniel looks up from the tool tray, "But Atchinson's in my department"
"He's the next man in line that I trust the most. He would do Anything
if I had his father in the room"
"I see"
William stands there
with the skin around him, sleeping without dreams. The Metallic Orb then glows
again... And he Drops to his knees, Awake. The men in the room just look at him,
looking up from their tools, and looking through their cross hairs. He shudders
at the cold chill before he looks up, "uuhh... I'm sorry.. I.. I don't know
what's happening"
Albright slowly walks over to him, pulling the
isolation suit hood over his head. "William, could you tell me what you see?"
He looks at the doctor as he steps forward, "I see.. I see you guys
looking at me. I see the lab.. and those guys with the guns"
Bellmont
waves his hand, and they lower their arms.
Albright stops an arms length
away from Will, "Do you remember what happened to you?"
For a second
he's confused by the question.. then he looks down at his legs.. his hands! The
Last strips of the plastic Suit only Cling to the Moisture of the Tendons! "oh
no... No! Not me too!"
"William, calm down... please, come sit down on
the examination bed. Everything is going to be all right" He walks William over
to the metal frame that is in the center where Chris had been laid. "We're going
to remove the alien skin. Everything is going to be fine"
"You can take
it off?"
"Yes, we have a way. Chris Penner showed us how to surgically
remove it", Daniel then extends his hand so the finger tips touch the Cartilage
on William's shoulder, "Everything's going to turn out all right"
----O----
Nathon Atchinson walks into the room. He's
wearing the robe that the doctor gave him. He walks into the center and climbs
onto the second operation bed.
William turns his head to the side,
"what's he here for?"
Dr. Albright only plugs more electrodes into the
tendon tissue, "He's here for comparison, just to remind us what your supposed
to look like without the 'skin'" The Dr. then turns to Nathon, "Your sure your
ready for this?"
"If I'm ever going to be, then this is it" The
assistant at his side then puts the gas mask over Nathon's mouth, and his eyes
slowly close.
Dr. Albright then turns back to William, "If we could put
you to sleep, removing the AD-3 would be that much easier... ", he looks through
his plastic visor and into the red film eyes of William, "Are you ready for
this?"
"I think so..."
Dr. Albright sticks the prong into the
base of Will's throat, between the Tendon strings the needle point pierces. The
surgical scissors are then slid underneath... He looks at the charts on the wall
to guide his cut through the tissue. It opens up a space for the Shears to grip.
As Daniel grabs them he looks up towards Bellmont.
Standing in the
doorway, She sarcastically calls out to the Daniel, "I never though 'You' would
commit murder Doctor. That's supposed to be Bellmont's hobby"
Both Men
turn their heads to her, And Bellmont Almost Collapses Under his own Legs When
he sees the AD-2! "no... no..."
The two men jump away from the table
when she starts to walk towards it. William looks up.. equally terrified. The
tissue at his chest intertwines and heals in seconds.
"Tell me, did they
explain how exactly they planned on removing your armor?", she picks up a knife
from the tool tray, "They were planning on ripping it from you. This here is
used to crack bone apart..." She Lifts the Knife.. And Stabs him In the Gut! The
Blade Sticks out of the Cartilage Padding that Covers Him! "I find it strange
that you would plan on dying so easily.."
Finally he screams,
"AAaauuuhhh!!" He falls Backward Off the Surgical Table and Onto the Floor! She
stands in her same place. William backs himself to the Wall.. his hands
nervously tap at the blade sticking into him.. dipping at the blood... He pulls
it out. The wound Quickly seals.
Bellmont points his gun at her, "Get
out of Here Now! You have No Business Here Today"
"You plan on killing
the boy... "
"It's My Property!", Bellmont slides his finger further
into the trigger, "I Need That Skin From Him Now!"
"Don't Get Me
Wrong... ", she raises her elbow, "If the boy plans on dying... ", The Sword
Extends Back sweapt! " ...Then I Only intend On Helping.."
He Presses
Himself Against the Wall! If He Could, He Would Sweat UnderNeath the Skin! The
Sound of His Heavy Breathing can Be Heard from the Metal Marbles at his Mouth...
She Presses the Sword Towards Him, "They want the Armor William... Do
You Really Want to Die for Them?"
He Breathes... And She Stares Directly
Into His Eyes... He can only whisper at first, " ...no.. ..no"
"Bellmont
Still needs it. Bellmont Still wants This Alien Device"
"No!!!", He
Screams and She Steps Away, "I Don't Want It!! I Don't Want It!!" He Grabs His
Head as Though in Agony! The Metallic Orb of His ForeHead Glows, Then The
Cartilage Plates Blast Themselves Off His Skin! The Strings of Tendon Wrap with
The Plates.. Collecting Behind him.. then disappear. He falls to the ground, his
eyes closed.
Bellmont lowers the gun. "I've lost it.. I've lost my last
weapon"
AD-2 looks down at William, "I'm quite surprised myself. I
thought it only came off when you were starving"
"What!?"
She
Looks Back at the Men, "You Haven't Lost anything. If He truly wants to, he can
call the armor back. Of course, that's only if he wants to" She picks him up by
the collar and props him in her arms. She tears the clothing from his back...
exposing two growths.. one on each blade of his shoulders. "I was curious... now
I know I'm not the only one with these" Putting him down, she steps away and
walks towards the door.
Albright tries to interrupt her, "Please Don't
Go... If What Bellmont says is true, Then we could use your help"
"My
Help? Why? So you can Cut Me open?", she glances at Bellmont's sly smile, "Don't
be so snug old man, you haven't got me yet... I cut the cables to all your
security cameras" Bellmont ceases to smile. "And yes, I did it throughout the
entire university, you won't eliminate me from the student population either"
She continues to walk, " ...from three AD Units, he is the Last"
She
then disappears. They look at William, their new weapon. unconscious on the
floor.
