Chapter Three:
Realizations
In the Dark Night they both lie in the
tall grass... The High Beams From the Jeep Shine on Them like they do Deer on
the High way...
He lies across from her, his feet being only a meter
from hers... In Shock he looks across to her.. Covered in the Tissue. Her
screams and welps have stopped, She Twitches in the Agony. Her head then falls
back onto the ground, lashing as though she were suffocating, as though the
sinew has gripped her by the nose and mouth. The flailings of her body then
slow... she starts to glisten in the night light as the tissues that wrap around
her gel... each sinew string gets wetter and wetter. Beads of pink sweat peer
through the gel.
Bellmont stares at Her... He Remembers the Alien
Ship... And the Man who's Foot it Ate... This device from the Alien Ship... He
Sees How it's Lashed at Her! He looks at his own Hand for a second.. a thin film
of gel covers it from when he was entangled by the device. Madison's body almost
stops twitching, almost, as though her death throws are finishing.
He
points His Gun and Fires Twice into Her Chest, Twice before That Thing can Lash
at Him Next! In a Cold Sweat he then Runs into the Jeep and Drives Into the
Night like a Mad Man Running from the Gates of Hell.

The Cartiger Study Lab, 10:30
am
William feels like a child on Christmas morning! They force him
to stay behind the glass barrier, but he can barely stay in the edge of his
seat! Today is the day that the scientists are studying the Alien Devices... and
the team he is with is analyzing "Alien Device-New".
He and the other
newbie on this team came in at eight, the scientists started an hour earlier
than that. For three hours they have been poking and prodding it. Once every
forty five minutes they would take it into another room and place it under
something like an x-ray. The scientists would never allow the two newbies to get
close, 'civilians' are always supposed to stay behind the protective glass.
Occasionally William can get a glimpse of the device through it's
special glass encasement... it looks like it has three wide prongs that extend
from a center piece. The center piece is largely a Circle.. half of a Metallic
Orb that has a ring cut into it near the base. Between two of the prongs on the
center piece are some weird mounds... symmetrical and intricate.
The
Scientist that found this Device, Deborah Merek, is the Team's leader. She's a
little unusual. William remembers her from yesterday morning, when she came out
of the Alien Ship in a diving suit.. she was the one that went in to surgically
remove the Alien Computer core. Occasionally she glances up at the newbies, The
looks she gives them, or William at least, is one of pity... like she feels
sorry for a puppy that she can't feed table scraps to. William and his comrade
will have to make due with listening in on the examination via the intercom.
Finally the first assistant just drops his scalpel on the table in
frustration, "I'm Telling You Deb! There's Just No Way We Can See What This
Thing Really Does Unless We Cut It Open!".
Pointing a finger at him,
"Look Charles.. I'm not Going to render this thing Useless just because you feel
the only way is to cut it open! We'll starting taking x-rays from multiple
angles if we have to..."
"We've already given it sona-grams, an ekg, an
eeg, a ckg, a ccg, shall I go on?"
Dr. Albright then walks in through
the door, "So how's the analysis coming on our surprise project?"
Charles immediately starts, "Horrible. We've done every scan possible
with ten year old equipment, and all we can identify are some nerve trunks along
each prong. We've also got some metallic orbs imbedded in the surface, and the
mysterious center circle piece just like all the other AD units."
"Well,
it's looks like you've made a preliminary outline..."
"We've got Crap
sir. We found out what it's gut's were in the first forty five minutes! We just
can't figure out what anything is for!"
Deborah breaks in to ease the
tension, "But We Do Have Two Leads sir... the center circle piece and the tendon
tissue. The formations in this device are unique to the other units... if we
could stimulate a small section we may be able to see the device in action, and
piece together it's operation from there.. before we destroy it by cutting it
open."
"That's Impossible Deborah!", Charles Starts up Again, "We're Not
Going to Figure Out Anything Until we Get Access to the Guts of That Thing...
Let Alone 'Stimulate' small Sections."
Albright raises his hand to lower
the volume. Everyone breathes for a second... "What perspectives do the research
advisors have on this? After all, this is why I brought them in on this."
The scientists look to the window at William and the other newbie.
Charles stumbles just to remember that the newbies even exist, ".. uh.. their
still catching up on our research to date."
"Well why not get them in on
this from the start?"
"But Dan!", Charles flares, "Their not even close
to working on a bachelor's degree! There's no way they could understand this
scientifically!"
"That's the whole point Charles. A fresh perspective.
They may give us a few avenues that we've been missing."
Deborah sighs,
"... ya' know.. we could use a break. Hell, maybe an over view would do us all
some good."
Dan Albright nods with a smile, "I'll be in to check on
you're progress this after noon. Good luck." The good doctor then heads back out
the door with a clip board in his hand.
Charles gives a frustrated
smile, "Well Deb, I'm going for lunch early, you can show these two around."
Charles then drops his lab coat on a chair and heads out the same door as
Albright did.
Deborah looks at the last colleague in the room, the quiet
one. "You might as well take a break too, I don't think showing the newbies
around will be that strenuous." The quiet guy tilts his hat to her and climbs
into a chair in the less lighted corner for a nap.
She then walks over
to the observation window and opens the door beside it, "If you've missed it I'm
Dr. Merek. Just call me Deb and we'll get along fine."
"No problem, I'm
Chris", extending his hand to hers first.
"Hi, I'm William."
"Nice to meet you guys. I trust you'd like to start off on the alien
ship?"
William's eyes light up. The other new guy, Chris doesn't seem
opposed to the idea either.. "That wouldn't be a problem at all"
"Excellent", Deb takes them into an office the next door over. The wall
is plastered with papers.. reports, analysis's, photo's, instrument readings,
everything that covers the research of the alien ship project. She centers them
to a large poster that looks like an organic blueprint.
"This is the
alien ship, or rather an estimated cross section" The paper looks like it's been
inked at a drafts mans table. The Ship is shaped like an egg; the bottom is the
wider end. It has a center line, and most of the internal chambers look like
'sacs' that hang off from it. At the bottom are protruding spikes... one giant
one that digs down from the center line, four thin angled tubes, and four large
angled spikes, (at least the drafts mans number bracket indicate four). "The
original research back in sixty eight showed us that the ship has blood vessels
and enzyme passages similar to any Earth organism", she point's to a red tack at
the top the diagram. "Later escavation gave us researchers a true scope for how
big this thing really is. When we finished 'digging it up' we mapped the outside
into this shape."
"Question..", William slowly interrupts, "How do you
know it's an Alien ship?"
Deborah smiles, "I'm going to like working
with you... When we dug around to the bottom our soil samples indicated trace
elements that we interpreted as the creatures exhaust... to us, it kind of
looked like alien rocket fuel waste."
Chris speaks in, "We'll how do you
know that this thing just doesn't have really powerful farts?"
They
laugh and Deb stresses to continue, "listen, if creatures from the Dinosaur Era
farted like this.. then they can really blame themselves for their extinction!"
Chris asks, "So what was an Alien Ship doing back with the Dinosaurs?"
"My favorite theory is that they were taking dinosaur samples. I believe
they saw the end of the dinosaurs coming, and they sent their ships to try and
preserve life of that Era."
William looks at her.. "Did you find
anything when you crawled inside?"
"So far.. no. I haven't found
anything except the ship itself.." She trails off, looking like some of her best
years of research have been a disappointment.
Chris then breaks life
back into the moment, "So what's this Thing?", pointing to a red tack at the
side of the ship hull.
"Oh that? That's where we first did our
penetration experiments. It took us years to figure out how to get inside... the
thing heals very quickly. That research lead to a patent for some regenerative
enzymes. It kind of works like growth hormones."
"So that's where the
explosion took place yesterday?", William asks.
"At about that height
level... we change entry sites once every so often so the ship doesn't build an
immunity in our general area."
"ohhhh... And what's this thing in the
center?", William points to a small chamber on the center line of the blueprint.
A red tack covers most it.
Deborah smiles, "That's the Control Room...
That's where I Cut out the ships Organic Computer Yesterday."
"I See",
William eye's the map intensely, dragging his finger down to the even larger
chamber just beneath it... "And this?"
"Oh, that...", she looks a bit ho
hum, "Quite frankly that's still one of our mysteries. Some people think it's a
Cargo Chamber, others think it's the center of some strange energy reactor.
Personally, I don't think the two computer chips at the top and bottom of the
chamber support an energy reactor theory."
William, interest peaked,
"What Computer Chips?"
"In the control room we found three masses of
intertwining flesh... We think the're alien neural structures.. or brains if
that suits you. At the center of each memory unit is a metallic orb.. this we
think is like a 'computer chip'.. that the alien ship processes data
electronically like a regular computer.. but stores it in neurons."
Chris pipes up, "Is the computer chip like that silver thingy in the
lab?"
Deb nods, "Yes.. this unknown device has a processor. Just like
the memory storage modules AD one through three. And so does the top and bottom
of this chamber. That's the mystery about it. Something is missing from this
chamber, we just don't know what it is yet."
Will asks, "Are we Allowed
to take a look at the AD modules?"
"Not our department yet. Not unless
we've got some excuse to.", Deb checks her watch, "Do you guys have any other
questions?" Both guys look at each other and kind of shrug, unsure of anything
else that even remains to be asked. "All right then, I'm going to let you two go
wander around. Have lunch, explore the facilities if you want to. Just keep
wearing your ID badges, and be back to work at twelve thirty. I've got some
reports I want to file, and I've got to round up the team.
"Hey no
problem", Chris says. He leaves for the Corridor almost instantly at the chance
to explore.
Deb turns away to look at a few other reports before heading
back to the door for the Lab. Turning back to Will, "Don't be afraid to look
around if you want. Just be polite, and keep out of anyone's way if they tell
you to stay out."
"Thanks.. I will." He smiles as she leaves.
He
turns again to stare at the blue print of the alien ship.. examining every
detail as though it were gold or a diamond. He doesn't want to stare at it too
long for fear of getting sick of the same image, but he can't help himself, he
can't get enough! He then forces himself to tear away, and looks to the other
papers posted to the wall like a bulletin board.
The reports are so dry that
they blur his vision as he even tries to read them. Instead he browses the
sensor scans and photos. Most are in black and white, and look blurred beyond
all belief. From his guess he'd say they were taken from the inside of the ship;
they look like 'inside camera' shots that you would find in a medical program
from t.v..
Then William finds a picture of the computer core in the control
room before they ripped it out yesterday... The triad of the A. D. units, the
'memory units'. Each fits into a perfectly smooth bulge, and at the center is a
perfectly smooth monolith. If he had his guess to judge size, he'd say the
monolith was half a meter in height.
William stares for another half hour.
He's almost nervous that someone will walk in and yell at him for being in a
place that he shouldn't, and even more afraid of walking down a restricted
corridor. He decides to look for the cafeteria.. at least then he could have an
excuse to walk the halls.
He leaves the room and turns right down the
office like hall. The flat carpet feels new, as looks the florescent light
ceiling panels and fixtures. It must have been done months ago because the
'newness' of the smell is faded away. Already on the doors of offices are comic
strip clippings from the newspaper.
After only walking for a minute and
a half the hall opens up into a small cafeteria. Mostly it's 'blazer men' that
are hanging out here. The room has maybe five or six long wood grain colored
tables and lots of orange chairs. There's no kitchen, but about four neon lit
vending machines, and a counter with sink unit aside a fridge. It's a nice
layout with a window view to the olive green hills of the university campus
grounds. The room's kind of crowded as it's getting closer to lunch time. He
sees researchers start to increase in number. He only has five dollars in his
pocket, and smelling an open lunch 'is' making him hungry.
"Hey Will!",
He sees his Dad call out to him from a small group of about four blazer men at a
table across the room. He walks over. The other men at the table are all younger
than his Dad, looking to be in their early but worn thirties. "Pull up a seat,
we won't bite. You got a good lunch?"
"Thanks Dad, Yah I'm fine, I've
got some money."
"Money? Noooo. It's too expensive here! Their insane,
they charge a dollar fifty for a cup of coffee!"
William sits there
while the other men at the table laugh. He'd call it a giggle but they were
grown men. "Here", Henry pushes an open sandwich wrapper to his son, "you want
half a sandwich?"
"Uh, no thanks Dad, I've got my own money"
"What? What's wrong with it? That's whole wheat with peanut butter and
jam. It's good for you. Don't you like peanut butter and jam?"
William
hates this! His dad tries to give him everything, it makes him feel so guilty
every time.. now, even for the little things. One of the younger blazer men
thankfully interrupts... "Has anyone seen Bellmont today?
"He hasn't
been in all morning", one of the others across the table answers, "He was out
all last night on 'rounds'." The man's brass name tag on the blazer reads
Michael Savoar.
The guy next to him almost laughs at the coincidence,
"Oh yeah.. Well here he is now" Their table looks to the door way of the
cafeteria to see Bellmont walking directly toward them. He looks so serious, and
his path is straight. He stops just over the shoulder of William's dad.
"Ehmkirek, I want to talk to you in my office now", he says, sounding
different, still serious and hardened, but as though he has seen the dead.
"yes sir, no problem" Henry Ehmkirek nudges the sandwich over again to
his son as he rises. Henry then begins to follow.
As Bellmont turns a
scientist from the next table over stands, "uh... Mr. Bellmont sir... your
investigation of the missing AD-1 unit..."
Bellmont looks at the
scientist directly in the eye for a full second.
"..you remember sir..
the alien memory unit?"
Bellmont simply walks past the little scientist
as though he were a fool. Grudgingly he mutters, "memory unit my Ass"
Henry follows Bellmont out the door. The scientist looks shocked at the
reaction. He then turns and sits back down with his peers, "What was that all
about? The memory unit and his Ass?"
William turns back to his table.
It's one of those uncomfortable silences again, and as the newbie, or 'outcast'
to the group, he feels as though he is the center of this unwanted attention.
Then for his own luck something pops into his head... "Is it true.. what
Bellmont was saying yesterday about 'secrecy, or else'?"
The guy across
the table, Michael, answers him with a loosened expression, "Don't worry about
Bellmont. He's just like that."
"So I don't have to worry about him ever
killing me"
"Oh no, We Will Silence you if you ever talk.. ", for some
reason he's still quite candid about the whole thing, "..It's just something you
shouldn't worry about. Most often nothing ever happens. That is, unless you
talk."
"So I'm never even allowed to retire?"
The other guy
pipes in, "You can retire, Don't worry. This isn't slave Labor. You can even
transfer to another university. That's how the scientists make their money.. by
waiting a few years and announcing some 'hacked up research' as a major break
through"
"And this is allowed.. but we're not allowed to talk about the
Ship itself?"
"It's how Cartiger makes his money. You see he always gets
a 'cut' of the profits made by the ventures based on this", Michael then starts
to sit up and raise his finger, "But whether you transfer, or just retire,
Bellmont will always keep his eye on you."
The other guy pipes in, "Take
that girl for instance..", pointing across the room to a table of women, mostly
scientists.
William looks over and sees Christine, "You mean the Black
Haired girl?"
"Yeah, one of the Black haired girls. I had to watch her
for three hours after work last night just because she disappeared during lunch
yesterday"
William kind of smiles, "She's kind'a cute.. is she seeing
anyone?"
The guys just laugh. "Sorry kid, she married"
The smile
on his face straightens, "...oh", he tries to bring the smile back and act
'non-shallant', "well it fits my luck, always the good ones"
Michael
then drives it in even harder, "It's gets worse, she's got two kids already"
William shrugs it off, he did just meet her and it's not 'that'
important. He finishes his rather dry peanut butter sandwich with a can of
gingerale from a vending machine and sits while the guys hang around and bull
shit for a while. Then he decides to head back to the lab early.
----O----
William walks through the lab door and
sees Chris standing directly over the specimen examination case! When William
walked in 'he' was going to walk straight over to the observation room set aside
for them, but with Chris here he just had to see what the Alien Device looked
like close up.
Chris flinches when William walks up behind him, "God,
ya' scared me. I thought you were one a' the doctors or something."
"No... I just got off lunch." William looks at the device, the metal
circle in the center, and the three thick prongs extending out from it. Between
two of the prongs are the 'mounds'. Up close they now look like facial
features.. a loose mound for the nose, and to curls that would make 'eye holes'.
"This part down here kind of looks like a mask"
"No it doesn't. It
doesn't look anything like a mask"
"Yes it does"
Chris looks at
him in skepticism, "All right then, what kind of a mask does it look like"
"Like one of those tribal masks.. one of the ones that only cover half
the face"
Chris then smiles again, like a high school bully that just
found a friend, "OK. I 'dare' you to try it on."
"Are You Crazy? It's
behind the glass"
"So let's take it outta' the glass, c'mon, I dare
you...", and Chris sneers. He looks at William, and his expression that the
doctors might come back into the room at any moment. "All right, I'll open it
up!", and the button on the counter is pressed in that second. With William's
mouth wide open Chris couldn't help but pick it up. "Now are you gonna try it on
or what?"
"uhh.. I don't think that would be a good idea. We don't know
if it's contaminated or anything"
"Look at my hands! Do you see them
turning green or anything?!" He looks at William for a few seconds longer, "All
right, I'll try it on!" He then raises it to his face with his tongue sticking
out like a warrior in a tribal dance! His head begins to 'bob' as he continues
with the Chanting motif! Suddenly, With the Mask Pressed Against His Face the
Ring of the Metal Circle Emits a Single Pulse of Light! In a Second five Thin
Tendons Burst from the Prongs, Wrapping around Chris's Skull! He screams and
drops to the floor.. "Get it Off!! Get it Off!!!"
William kneels down,
afraid to even touch it, but trying to find a safe place to grab! The three
prongs then bend, bringing themselves flush over Chris's head, The tendons from
them Tightening like a binding rope! His eye's indeed look through the eye
holes, and they morph themselves to fit perfectly. Smaller tendons then Crawl
into his nostril and the corner of his eyes.. he tries to squint, but they force
through, leaving a dimple of blood at the surface! He Screams In Agony Again!
Deborah walks in, dropping her papers at the door, "My God!", the
initial shock sets in for her, "What the Hell Are You Doing!??!!" She Jumps Down
To His Face! With out even Latex gloves she Tries to rip it Off, at her Bare
hands the Alien Flesh begins to Burn like acid, When she Jumps away She can see
the Alien Device sweating. She Jumps Up to the Phone, "This Is Lab Five! Get
Somebody Down Here! I Don't Care, It's an Emergency!"
----O----
Chris can feel his heart beat. He can feel
the stinging pain run through his eyes, and burn up through his nose. Soon his
temples too feel like the tendons are drilling through them. His senses have
long sense gone black. Like a dream he sees himself... but it's not him.. it's a
big hairy bearded man. On the brutes forehead is the same mask. He's the brute
and himself, both with the mask... and now he's running through the plains with
a slimed pouch in his hands.
----O----
Standing over Chris is a team of men in
Lab coats. One of them flashes a light in his eye, and the pupils don't even
dilate...
----O----
He's
the cave man, and he's running towards the huge monster, The Two Legged Beast
with a Powerful long Tail, small arms, and an Immense head, as it roars the
teeth bare. The circle in his forehead only glows, and for some reason Chris
knows no fear, only what the masters wish of him....
----O----
"Chris..", The Scientist speaks directly
into his face, "Chris Penner, can you hear me? Tap your finger if you can. Give
us some sort of signal"
----O----
The
beast is on the ground, and Chris, the bearded caveman is kneeling on the
forehead of the Albertasauras... the obsidian shard from a rope belt is in his
hand, and he cuts a straight line into the flesh of the creature... The circle
glowing, Controlling his movements.. His hand holding the organic pouch then
slides in, placing it just under the rim of the skull.
----O----
The
Doctors have ripped his shirt open, and have pressed some monitor to his chest,
just over his heart. The pulse on the machine is racing wildly! His chest is
covered in sweat. His muscles twitch, as though he were in a heart attack!
"I wanna' cut this thing off a' Him!"
Charles the Lab Assistant
Interrupts, Grabbing the Doctors Hand, "Like Hell Your Just Cutting This Thing
Off! It's the first Time We've Seen This Thing in Action, It's the best
Demonstration to what it Actually Is!"
Deborah shouts back, "Cut It Off
Now, This is a Kids life We're Talking About!"
"Don't Cut it off", Dan
Albright leans forward, "It could affect heart rate or something". Deb looks
right into the doctors eyes, looking for sincerity, speaking he responds "We
don't know how far it's linked into him.. how far it's digging into his skull."
"Imbah uk", In panting breaths He finally speaks...
"Chris,
Chris Penner... ", The Doctor keeps nudging him, "Can you hear me?"
----O----
He
stands there, looking at his master for the moment... the light that is the
master and is not. He continues to speak to them, "Imbah uk". He then hears the
others outside, and with blurred vision he can see them.
"Chris, can you
hear us?"
"....yes", it hurts to say, to actually speak it. As a Dream
Changes he Then sees his Hands as Those of a Monster.. With Claws and Scales...
When he looks he faces out into a field, with another Creature fighting in the
center.... "Guyba..." it's what comes into his mind... and now fear.
His
dream changes again, the masters are talking for a moment of his life, and of
the Guyba... a failure they call him... he has pleased them and he's a failure.
"Chris, are you all right, can you feel me grabbing your hand?", the
other outside keep talking to him. He vaguely answers "yes", but the dream is
far more intense. He is the bearded man, and at his forehead another creature
points with the tool.... "OuGaba toh" is all he can say. The outsiders ask him
what it means, and with further pain he replies, "it's my mask, they want to
take it from me." In blurred vision he can see the outsiders of the lab as again
his dream changes.. his heart feels like it is going to explode.
----O----
Bellmont sits in his office. Henry was the
last of the loose ends to tie up, and had just left his office. It still didn't
feel like enough. He sat their, staring at the phone, dreading the direct line
to Cartiger. He kept tapping his finger... Twenty years, and no problem.. Not
like this!
The walls of his office were paneled in dark brown wood. A
fire place in one side would have been fitting, but it didn't fit Bellmont's
style. Instead of plaques or books he mounted heads.. hunting trophies of deer
and bear.
He should never have ran... never in thirty years has he ran
from a hunt... not since the lion. He should never have gotten scared. He
grabbed the phone and dialed extension four one three, "Get me Parkins, Lewis,
and Anderson... I want them in my office now." He hung up and stood waiting. On
the wall behind him his finger caressed the barrel of his mounted shotgun, for
once his face showed actual fear.
The three blazer men walked into his
room, standing at attention. "Mr. Bellmont... you wanted to see us sir?"
"Yes, we're working late tonight. We have to make sure that something is
actually dead."
