Chapter Two: Betrayals & Espionage

The door was closed behind them, and the group of young men took seats in comfortable swivel chairs around the table. It was a meeting room that they are in, and triangle cut sandwiches have been laid out in the center of the circle table. The sandwiches smell like ham and mayonnaise.

A big tall man wearing a blazer stands from the table. He's the only one in the circle not "new to the company". He's old, maybe fifty or sixty, but he looks as strong as an army general. Then he spoke...

"I Take it All of you have been to the basement 'With Out' signing release forms", he says sternly. He looks as though this was of the greatest sin, as though he were a god, angry, and we had just eaten the apples from 'His' tree. "I am Bellmont", the man informs them, "I am the one in charge of security for this facility", he then nods to someone behind them.

Two younger men in similar blazers reach over and hand out forms to each of the new guys. William skims through his... it's some sort of release form.

"All of you here are now sworn to secrecy...", interrupting Bellmont is one of the new guy skids, giggling, "... if you Don't abide by our security practices, then we will meet you with measures that will ensure your silence".

The skid then just breaks out laughing, "What are you going to do?! ha ha! Kill us?!"

Bellmont nods again to the blazer men. The lights dim and Bellmont steps aside so the newbies could see the projection screen with out obstruction. The slide show starts... "In this photo you can see what a man looks like with his head smashed into a concrete floor". Click, the slide changes. "In this one you see what a man looks like when his leg has been shot off at the thigh, I assure you, he bleed to death very quickly". The slide changes again... "And this is what a drowned man looks like as he's being buried in concrete... If Any of You Tell AnyOne Outside Our Facility About that Alien Ship, I Promise you, that You will Die very Quickly. Do I make myself Clear?"

No one answers, everyone stares at the screen, and Bellmont stares at them. When William stares at the screen he doesn't see anything gory or frightening.. to him it just looks like something from Hollywood.. he believes it's real, but it's just dissociated.

"Do You UnderStand! Any Of You?!"
Bellmont made them jump. Each nod to him with their attention.

"Good. Then I'll continue.", He grabs a folder from his place on the table and pulls out some forms, and opens it up to go through it, "Your all being given a standard contract. You'll receive minimum wage for an eight hour day, the company will give you Full 'health benefits', and there's a retirement package when you're sixty five. You can transfer to other departments within the facility, and with study, you can even advance. Read through the contracts, and fill out Everything."

Bellmont then tosses six forms onto the table from his folder, one for each newbie.

There's a knock at the door. One of the 'blazer men' opens it to address the interruption, "...Sir... it's for you."

Bellmont points to the other blazer man, "When your finished signing, Mr. Harris will take you back to the lab", and Bellmont walks to the door.

"But what if we don't want the job?", one of the smart looking newbies asks.

Bellmont turns at the door, a remote in his hand... 'click', the screen projector shows a man with a dent in his forehead.. a dent the size of a grapefruit, stretch marks that tear inward seep with both red and blue blood. "My job here is to ensure Absolute secrecy", and Bellmont closes the door behind him.

The lights go back up, and the newbies are left to sign.

----O----

Bellmont closes the door behind him. A 'blazerman' faces him with a worried face...

"Sir, We've got a problem..... there's been a security breach"

"What kind of breach?!"

The younger man starts leading towards the elevator, "...downstairs... somebody's been shot."

"Who did it?"

"We don't know sir, we just found the bodies."

"Bodies?"

"Yes sir, the guards at the specimen storage room. Dr. Rodrigez was filing something when he found them."

The two enter the elevator, and Bellmont grabs the emergency phone, "Bring me down to B-4, now."

The elevator immediately starts descending. The doors open to cold linoleum floors, and empty white lighting. It sounds crowded as the security 'blazer men' siege the halls. Bellmont Is the presence to behold as he moves through the corridors to scene of spilled blood. He kneels down with two others at the smears on the floor, in front of the open "Specimen Storage" room door. "What was taken?"

"The scientists say it's something called AD-1. They just brought it out of the alien ship this morning. It's supposed to be a part the ships brain."

"I want the whole research facility locked down. I want every security team on patrol, Everything is now under surveillance, that includes the regular parts of the university."

"Yes Sir"

Bellmont then rises and steps into the storage room. There is no light in the ceiling, only shadows and the hue from the hall. He looks down at the open metal box. Nitrogen fog rises out from it, and a cable dangles to it's nitrogen tank. Still on the lower shelf are three boxes that read "Alien Device 2, Alien Device 3, and Alien Device New".

From the clatter outside, Dr. Albright steps into the room.... "Oh God No! Our research is crippled"

Bellmont Charges for the Doctor! Grabbing Him by the Heart of His Shirt Bellmont Pins Him up Against the Wall! "This Is All Your Fault Doctor!!!"

Dr. Albright can barely breath through his squeezed shirt, "Let Me Go!"

"You've Sabotaged Security... You Let the Spy in Here!"

"I did not!"

"You Let Those New People In Without Finalizing Security Clearance!", Bellmont continues to lift Albright off the floor, "You've Run Your Part of the operation So Loosely than Any Spy could Get In... you Wanted Evidence to get out... You Planned This!"

Choking, "You Thick headed Bull, I did not. Put me down now."

Slowly Bellmont lowered Dan Albright so that his feet touch the floor, but then his grip changes to the shoulders, continuing to press the doctor to the wall... "I am Going to Get Cartiger to replace you. And you won't be permitted to transfer, not like all the others... No more University for you."

"Your going to kill me Bellmont? I didn't break the secrecy, I only ran this place like a research facility."

"You Let Civilians in Here!"

"I needed a fresh view point... someone untainted by the religion of science. If, and if Cartiger decides my time here is over, the next guy he brings in is going to see the same thing."

Bellmont's hands loosen, and slowly he let's go of Dan Albright, Lowering his hands to his sides. "Doctor", breathing heavily, "If I find Anything that says you've let this happen... You will Regret ever seeing that ship."

----O----

It had been one 'Interesting Day'. William spent the rest of the afternoon reading reports... 'catching up' on what progress the scientists had made in forty years. The uptight blazer men then took him along with all the other newbies to get photo I.D.. That was it... that was his first day of work at his new job... He got to see an Incredible alien ship, sign his life over, then read reports. Then he took the bus home to his apartment on the south side of the city.

The sun was beginning to set in the dark blue sky. Soon Will's room mate would be home from work. The apartment was only the upstairs of an old house. He stood in his bedroom, looking out the window down into the street below. Children could be heard outside somewhere, and the downstairs neighbor was playing country music loudly again.

William then went over to the unmade bed. He dropped flat down onto it, his body was tired. He visualized the alien hull when he passed his hand against it. He remembered the slides of the mutilated people. And again the blast of the alien hull, ripping open like whale blubber.

"Oh 'god' I wish I could talk to someone about this."

He could hear the door opening downstairs, and someone started stomping in. The room mate was home. Allen got up to the top of the stairs and went into his own room, the one just beside Will's, the two divided by paper thin walls. Allen just shout's across, "So how was your first day of work?"

"It was... interesting"

"so is that good or bad?"

"I don't know yet"

Allen then walks into Will's room and leans in the door way, "So are you gonna like working there?"

"I think so."

"Well, if ya' don't, you can always come back and work at the paper."

"Thanks, but I think I'm gonna stay with this new job."

Allen turns and heads for the kitchen, "So is it full time or part time?"

"It's full time", William gets up and walks back over to the window. The sky is now turning black and the street lamps are on.

"If it's full time what are you going to do about your movie making?"

"I don't know... maybe I'll have to save it for the weekends."

Now shouting as he clangs through pots and pans, "Are you sure you'll have the energy? I mean you just said the job was full time."

"I'll have to see how it goes." William looks at the street below, the children are quiet, probably brought inside for supper, unfortunately the country music still plays.

"Ya want anything for supper?"

It smells like Allen has already thrown some ground beef on the stove. "Sure". The street lamps give the road an orangish tint. The strange thing is a white van is parked across the street. Cars are parked on this street all the time.. new ones across the street, and beat up ones on this side... but his van had a logo on the side, a sun with it's rays peering over the horizon... the university logo... no one was inside the van, it was just strange to see one parked in this neighborhood.

William went to the kitchen to help cook supper. He knew he wouldn't talk anymore about work today.

----O----

Madison woke up. She was lying on her stomach, and felt like she'd been cramped into a straw. She smelled the dirt and dust bunnies she had been using as a 'pillow'. She looked down out the horizontal ventilation shaft and into the light. She lifted one of her arms out from under her and checked her watch... it said it was 9:30. It was now dark outside, and time to go.

She crawled all the way to the end of the shaft. She smiled at the success of her small gamble, no one had been able to see her that far into the ventilation shaft. She pushed the panel off, and pulled herself into the large 'study atrium'.

The study atrium was basically empty, and echoed at the slightest sound. A guy across the room stared at her from his books. This was not the best place for her to be, the cluster of surveillance camera's hanging from the catwalk above would immediately show her to Bellmont's men.

She ran across the Atrium, into the hall with the glass wall showing the outside foothills. She just went out an exit door and into the night foot hills. If everything stays on schedule she soon would meet up with her 'official co-workers' as planned.

She runs south, along the path of the river that's half a mile further down into the foothills. It's all yellow 'greenery' in this part of the so called city. If it were daytime it would be like an African veldt with the exception of lions or zebra.

She keeps running for another half hour in the tall grass. The glow in the dark compass on her wrist points the way. She could probably run faster up and down the hills if she used a flash light instead of the moon, but was afraid to be seen by anyone.

Suddenly She Stopped! She Heard A Vehicle! There are no roads in these part of the foothills. It was an all terrain vehicle... but was it Chronos, or Bellmont's team?

It was too early for her coworkers to show up, she was supposed to meet with them a full five kilometers (3.1 miles) from the university. She ducked down into a patch of thorn bushes that scraped against her, against her face and hands, and through the cloth of her black suit.

The engine of the vehicle had stopped at the peak of the hill. Had they spotted her? Or were they only looking out for her? Using this place as a checkpoint? The engine then cut.. it was obviously a jeep. They weren't going anywhere, not yet. If she was late, the special ice packs in her back pack would melt, and then the "specimen" she was carrying would thaw.

She could hear the dopes in the jeep blasting the radio at full volume. If she was lucky, they would be too distracted to see her run down towards the river. She crawled to the valley between the two hills, then stood... they hadn't noticed her yet... She ran towards the river...

The Engine of the Jeep Started up Again! "Shit!!" It was Driving Along the Crest of the Hill, Gaining On Her! She Pumped Everything She Had Into a Full Sprint. The height of the hill was lowering into the valley. Some One jumped From the Jeep and Tackled Her! They Rolled Into the Tall Grass With him still Clinging Around her shoulders! When they stopped, he was still squeezing her... she reached the gun at her waist, and pointed it to the thigh of the man behind her... She fired a silent round into one of his main arteries! He screamed and instantly released her! He was then cradling his own bleeding leg.

Another man stood over her in the blinding head lights of the Jeep. He stood there pointing his gun at her, "Don't move or I'll shoot" Without saying anything she pointed in his direction and fired. "AAAuuuuggghhhh" Her gun clicked at empty. She then turned from her back to her knees and bolted again for the river.

Someone else got out of the jeep, pick up a rock, and threw it at her. It hit her below the backpack and in the kidney. The baseball sized rock hurt, and she dropped to the ground in pain! The silhouette that walked towards her was big, and looked very angry....

Bellmont then spoke in slow words... "Madison St.Clare... You were one of my best guards. Why would you sell out?"

She turned on her back again, and faced him, "I didn't sell out, I was infiltrating."

"Who would infiltrate us? Tell me now."

"It's Chronos old man. I work for Chronos. If I finished this mission, they were going to 'promote' me into something you couldn't even imagine."

His words still slow and stern, "What kind of promotion were they going to give you, what could be worth you life?"

"A Vamore."

His face almost shifted into puzzlement, but in truth he held it's rigidity. "What made you think we wouldn't catch up with you Madison?"

"Chronos is a 'real' organization. You've been in a hick town too long Bellmont, you don't know how to run a real outfit."

"And what about your Family? You would sacrifice your mother for some promotion?"

She Laughs, "That old woman in the hospital? I'm paying to use her name. She doesn't care if I'm her daughter or not, as long as I call her once a week. You see, old people get real lonely, and sometimes just want someone to talk to. Quite frankly I don't care if you shoot the old bag."

"You are 'such' a bitch", he then pulls a handgun from his jacket, "give me the specimen. Now."

She looks at the gun he's pointing at her, and after a few moments she pulls the back pack off. She reaches in and pulls out the specimen, the circular unit, the metallic orb in the center, and three metal plates encasing strings of organic tissue that wrap around the center.

She looks at the specimen for a moment, then with a sigh of conceit, tosses it to Bellmont like a basket ball. It drops to the ground, while still pointing his gun at her, he kneels to pick it up. As he rises again with an edge of it gripped in his hand, he turns it over to see the side with the metallic orb... a ring in the orb starts glowing!

His hand starts to shake because he's nervous... The Orb Ring is Glowing... and Now the Organic Tissue is beginning to Move! Unit AD-1 is doing something! The Metal Casings Around the Tissue then pops Off, and the Tissues Whip Down at Madison St.Clare!

Bellmont Tries to Untangle His Hand from the Tissue, It Pulls and Tightens, More and More of it Wraps Around Madison...

He Sweats While Trying to Free his Hand from the Entanglement.. and She Tries to Crawl Backwards, Fumbling in her Escape! More and More of the Organic Tissue Wraps Around Her! The Glowing Metallic Orb is brought With the Organic Tissue and Presses against Her!

Bellmont Finally Yanks his hand Free, so Hard he Throws Himself Onto the Ground.

She Screams, "Muueehhh...... AAHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!"

The Glowing Metallic Orb has made it's way to her fore head... The Thick Organic Strings have Spun themselves into thousands of Thinner Strings... They Wrap Around Each Limb.. each finger even.. She's encased in the Tissue. Bellmont stares at her with his eyes wide, and his mouth open...
